Forming part of the recent Scottish Housing Expo in Inverness, JM Architects’ Stealth Terrace is a four dwelling development for Cairn Housing Association.

The massing in section comprises one-and-a-half-storeys, with the upper rooms and spaces partially embedded in the roof. The living/study areas are organised around double-height volumeswhich are filled with light from large south-facing windows. These form the hub of family living – a kind of social connector in the dwelling. Adjoining rooms can be used as living spaces or bedrooms, depending on the preferences of the inhabitants.

The south, east and west elevations, together with the roof, are wrapped in a skin of black synthetic rubber. A black-stained larch facade faces north. The architect says the intention was to use a material that could encapsulate a prefabricated JJI joist timber frame system and mould itself over the folded roof, gutters and window surrounds. A Prelasti epdm membrane was specifed, with installation taking just two weeks. The gutters are concealed within the envelope, ensuring an uncluttered aesthetic. Secured to the outer face of the membrane is a fine stainless steel mesh that supports climbing ivy. Raised surrounds to the lower level windows act as a ‘trimming edge’ for the vegetation.
